Cartoons

Greetings Internet!
This week Yellow House brings you our take on animated characters.   Here we bring our focus to characters with a singular look.  The idea is to take what makes the character iconic and translate that to our own style.  Get ready to see characters from realms of animation, from Saturday mornings, to film, to anime.  Stay posted for a new theme and round of art next week!

"Finn and Jake"
Adventure Time

Adventure time is an amazing series and does a good job of teaching light morals while still being a consistent source of awesome. It may not be as off-the-wall as the original pilot but in its current form it still does a good job of having a sense of humor. I haven't seen many episodes but of the ones I've seen so far "Mortal Folly" is my favorite. The Lich, an absolutely terrifying villain nearly kills princess bubble gum... I mean how often does a necromancer almost kill a main character that's made of candy in a cartoon?
NOT TOO OFTEN SAYS I.

"Goku"
Dragon Ball Z
Graphite

Goku is the main character from the manga/anime Dragon Ball created by Akira Toriyama.  Dragon Ball is one of my favorite shows. It’s full of action, humor, and heart. Goku is great because he can smile in the face of death and find strength in defeat.   The world of Dragon Ball is a mixture of old and new, ancient magic and futuristic technology.  Goku is loosely based upon the Monkey King from the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West”.  I wanted to make Goku modern while at the same time like something from a legend. I drew him flying on his cloud Kinto’un, armed with is staff Nyoi’bo.  If you haven’t experienced Dragon Ball and you like your stories action packed, track down the manga or the anime.

"Brendan and the Illuminators Hunt for Feathers"
Secret of the Kells
Graphite and Watercolor

The Secret of Kells" is a gorgeous film and one of my favorites. The characters and art style are incredibly unique and vibrant.
I love the beginning scene, where Brendan and the Illuminators of Kells are chasing down a goose. The group is rendered in a way that makes them move as a solid shape, and while I think that is genius, I wanted to draw them as individual pieces with individual running styles. Drawing up this idea in my own style was a fun challenge.
